Management (M) 7

People in management roles in the disability sector develop and deliver flexible and responsive services and supports. You will also manage the workforce and resources that support people with disability to achieve their goals and aspirations, and to live in their community as they choose.  There is a diverse range of roles within the Management job family such as:

  • Program Managers
  • Area Managers
  • Program Coordinators
  • Regional Managers
  • Assistant Managers
  • General Managers
  • Operational Managers

As an M 7, you’ll be a coordinator or team leader. You may lead a small team of staff or be the sole employee of a very small service provider in a single location.  Using a human rights approach you will develop an understanding and build your capacity to deliver part of a service and/or program.

You will participate and build local networks and support your peers and your team by sharing knowledge and information. You’ll plan and schedule your own work independently and may need to assess the performance and determine the learning and development needs of you team.

Qualifications and experience

Even if you don’t have formal qualifications or training in disability, you’ll certainly have other skills, knowledge, capabilities and transferable qualifications and experience that will support you to have a successful and enjoyable career in the disability sector.

Each employer will specify requirements for particular roles in the Management job family. However, to be considered for a M 7 role, you’ll generally need to have a tertiary qualification and/or equivalent knowledge and experience, or a 4 year degree with some experience.

As there is always more to learn, you’ll also be expected to undertake regular professional development to increase your knowledge and skill set.

M 7 roles are challenging and rewarding. Through your contribution and leadership, you’re ensuring that your organisation and its employees are making a difference to the lives of people with disability.
