Direct Service Delivery (DSD) 3

DSD 3 roles are generally frontline positions, which means you are working directly with people with disability and making a real difference to a person’s life by supporting them to achieve their individual goals and aspirations, and to live in the community as they choose. Role titles within DSD 3 include:

  • Outreach Worker
  • Disability Support Worker
  • Social Educator
  • Family Support Worker
  • Community Assess Worker

As a DSD 3, you’ll be engaging with people with disability and supporting them to achieve life, recreation, employment and educational goals as outlined in each person’s individual support plan.

In addition to supporting each person’s independence you will be providing standard support in areas such as personal care, skill development, social support and community participation.

It is crucial for you to understand person-centred approaches - which means putting the needs, wants and aims of the people you support first.

You will also need to understand standard practices and guidelines and follow detailed and precise work procedures to ensure you provide the very best support for the people you work with.

Qualifications and experience

Employers will specify qualification or equivalent experience requirements for particular roles at this level. However, the range of qualifications or training and experience that align with a DSD 3 are equivalent to a Vocational and Educational Training Certificate III.

But you don’t worry if you don’t have formal qualifications or training in disability, as you’ll most certainly have other skills, experience, capabilities and qualifications that are extremely useful. Your existing skills and experience will help contribute to a successful and enjoyable career in the disability sector.

Having the right attitude and a desire to make a difference are two other important qualities that you’ll need as a DSD 3.
