Direct Service Delivery (DSD) 2

DSD 2 roles are generally frontline positions, which means you are working directly with people with disability and making a real difference to a person’s life by supporting them to achieve their individual goals and aspirations, and to live in the community as they choose. Role titles within DSD 2 include:

  • Outreach Worker
  • Disability Support Worker
  • Social Educator
  • In-Home Support Worker
  • Community Assess Worker

As a DSD 2, you’ll be assisting people with disability in such areas as personal care, general living skills and transportation, in addition to supporting people to participate in the community.

Through on-the-job training and team work, you’ll develop a basic understanding of the range of supports required by individuals and of person-centred approaches - which means putting the needs, wants and aims of the people you support first. It’s important that you also understand basic organisational systems and procedures in order to do your job effectively.

The style of work is largely repetitive, therefore giving you the opportunity to master the work and become confident in your role. Even though you’ll be working under supervision, you will also carry out certain aspects of your job independently.

Qualifications and experience

You don’t need to worry if you don’t have any formal qualifications or training in disability, as you’ll almost certainly have other skills, experience and capabilities that are extremely useful and that will help contribute to having a successful and enjoyable career in the disability sector. Having the right attitude and a desire to make a difference are two other important qualities that you’ll need as a DSD 2.

Employers will specify qualification or equivalent experience requirements for particular roles, but generally you’ll need to have a current driver’s licence and first aid certificate to be considered for a DSD 2 role.
