Warrah is a disability services provider based in Dural, a suburb in north-west Sydney. It provides services for people who have an intellectual disability with moderate to high support needs. It provides about 100 places for adults and 20 places for school children. It occupies 30 acres at 20 Harris Road Dural and owns and rents other sites in nearby suburbs. We employ about 120 staff members. Our annual turnover is in excess of $7.5 million a year.
Warrah’s guiding philosophy comes from the principles and methods of Rudolf Steiner. Dr Steiner was an Austrian born philosopher, artist, educator and spiritual researcher. He lived from 1861 to 1925.
Warrah was founded in 1969 when the first residential cottage was built. Warrah now has 10 residential cottages, or Group Homes, which make up Warrah’s Adult Residential Services; they accommodate 49 people with intellectual disabilities. Six of the 10 Group Homes are located on the Harris Road site and they accommodate 30 residents. The other four Group Homes (and 19 people) are spread through suburbs in north-west Sydney.
Warrah also provides Adult Day Services. These are designed to support adults with an intellectual disability by providing them with meaningful planned activities. They have 65 clients and are located at 20 Harris Road and another nearby site in Dural. Most of the clients are from Warrah’s Adult Residential Services with the rest coming from other sources.
Finally, we have Warrah School. Warrah School aims to offer a high quality, individualised education for students with intellectual disabilities. The school seeks to encourage each student to achieve to the best of his or her abilities. Warrah believes that every student has the right to receive a full, balanced, holistic education and should not be deprived of a full range of curriculum subjects because of developmental or intellectual impairment.
As a not-for-profit organisation and a registered charity, we have always relied on support from the community.
