The Forsight Foundation For The Deaf/Blind

What is Deafblindness?

Deafblindness is described as a unique and isolating sensory disability resulting from the combination of both a hearing and vision loss or impairment which significantly affects communication, socialisation, mobility and daily living.

What we do.
OUR OBJECTIVES

  • To promote, encourage, foster and develop the best quality care possible, accommodation, communication and training of adults who are deaf and blind with multiple disabilities.
  • To assist residents to interact with others in the community and to protect their rights and dignity as members of the community.
  • To facilitate counselling, supported employment and day programs for our residents and to provide them with varied opportunities for learning communication skills for daily living and recreation activities.
  • To assist residents to lead satisfying lives and as far as possible become self determining.
  • To consolidate world knowledge and to encourage sponsorship for research and for specific projects.
  • To become a model of best practice in the provision of services for adults who are deaf and blind with additional disabilities.

OUR PHILOSOPHY

Staff working at Forsight Australia group homes believe each adult is a unique individual. The Board, staff, adults, their families, and Guardians Advocates all foster a mutual respect model. Staff adopt a person-centred approach to all aspects of Community Group Home living.

Who we are.
OUR BEGINNING

In 1978, parents of deaf and blind children established their own organisation in collaboration with founders Jean and the late Tom Grunsell. Today there are eight independent group homes supported by 50 full-time, part-time and casual staff caring for 32 adults with sensory and additional disabilities, offering choices and producing outcomes the founding parents could only dream about in 1978.
