Hastings District Respite Care

Hastings District Respite Care is a not for profit organisation that has a 26 year history of successfully establishing respite services for people with dementia and people with disabilities.
Respite is one of the key support services that helps strengthen the relationship between the people with dementia or disability and their carer and plays an important role in ensuring that people remain and are supported in the community for as long as possible.
For the carer, this means supporting them in their caring role (giving them time away and the ability to engage in other activities of choice) knowing that the person their care for is receiving quality support and activities.
For people with dementia we take-over the caring role and operate four centred-based care facilities for the Port Macquarie-Hastings area. Our two main centres are Sherwood Park and Greenmeadows in Port Macquarie and these are facilities designed specifically for people with dementia. Our other centres in Wauchope and Laurieton are shared with other community groups. We currently service 350 people with dementia each year.
For people with disabilities we provide a number of programs that cover respite and leisure.
Our family program provides respite for the primary carer that is planned and time based. It can be for a few hours or include overnight stays. The service is provided in the person’s own home, another person’s home or other accommodation. There are a number of different packages under this service.
Leisure link focuses on providing day/evenings and weekend programs where the person with disability can spend time with their peers in age appropriate creative, recreational and leisure activities.
Teen Time is an after school and vacation support program that targets secondary aged students in years 7 to 12 with an intellectual disability and moderate to high support needs. For older students we have our Youth Group.
