Giant Steps Tasmania
Giant Steps Tasmania is a not for profit, independent, specialist school and therapy centre (K-12) for children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). Giant Steps Tasmania was established in 1995 by a group of dedicated parents and local community supporters who were committed to ensuring focused and specialised education to suit the individualised needs of children with Autism Spectrum Challenges. The school is governed by members of a Board. Our organisation has three main areas:
1. First Steps - Early intervention services for children aged 3 to 7. Our team of professionals can provide Occupational Therapy, Speech Pathology and programs designed to suit the individual needs of the client. Programs may focus on sensory issues, social skills, school readiness or early academic skill development.
2. Giant Steps - An Independent K – 12 school. Our school is the only specialised school for Autism in Tasmania. Students receive an individualised curriculum and program designed by our team in conjunction with the family and other relevant service providers. This may focus on language and reading, social skills, information and communication technology or numeracy to name a few.
3. Next Steps - Our community access and day support group for adult aged clients living with a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder. The group runs for five days a week and is currently operating 40 weeks a year parallel with school terms. Next Step aims to help our client’s foster connections within their community and guide them towards independence, meaningful employment and a rewarding social life.
