Council on the Ageing NSW (COTA)
COTA NSW is an independent, non-partisan, consumer-based peak body representing people over 50 in NSW. They aim to foster a society where seniors are respected, consulted, included, represented and heard. They work with government, business, the media and the wider community to represent the aspirations, issues and concerns of seniors.
COTA NSW has been active since 1956, launching programs such as Meals on Wheels and the Seniors Information Service in NSW. They continue to play a major role influencing key decision makers, working closely with elected representatives, government policy makers, service providers and the media to advance their goals.
COTA NSW is an expert provider of adult education, having piloted a model of peer-to-peer education designed specifically for adults over 50. Their approach to adult education recognises that people over 50 possess a wealth of knoweldge and life experience. Their peer-to-peer education model respects this and promotes a relaxed, interactive relationship between the volunteer peer educators who deliver their education sessions and those who attend them.
All COTA NSW peer education sessions are free and available to groups of 10 or more. COTA NSW strive to make their education program as accessible as possible and have recruited volunteer peer educators who speak Cantonese, Greek, Italian, Madarin and Vietnamese.
