Acquired Brain Injury Services

Acquired Brain Injury Services is a not for profit specialist service for people with an acquired brain injury which has been operational since 1986.
Our aim is to enhance our clients’ lifestyle, by maintaining and promoting independence and providing opportunities for socialisation and community integration with appropriate and quality service provision.
As brain injury is very individualised our support is tailored to suit our clients’ individual needs on a one to one basis in their own homes and in the community.
The services that we currently provide to our clients are:
  • Individually tailored support with one to one staff, to meet the unique needs of our clients.
  • Individual Service Plans to assist our clients identify short term goals which they wish to achieve to live independently in the community and meet their support needs.
  • Recreation activities on an individual and group basis to promote socialisation and integration.
  • Case Co-ordination and Management to ensure consistency of our clients' support, rehabilitation programs and to provide linkages with other Service Providers.
  • The provision of positive behaviour management support programs to assist clients further in rehabilitation.
  • 24 hours on call facility for crisis management and any emergencies.
  • Advocacy on behalf of our clients.
  • Specialist Supported Accommodation (Bathurst).
  • ABI Services is a Registered Community Housing Provider.
We also provide
  • Detailed assessments and costings based on our model of service provision for Solicitors, Insurance Companies and Government Departments.
  • Promotion of the awareness of Brain Injury in the community and expanding the education of the General Public on the effects of Brain Injuries.

Areas we cover

We currently support people with an Acquired Brain Injury in the greater Sydney Metropolitan area and in the country areas of the Central West of NSW covering Bathurst, Orange, Cowra and Dubbo.
Where the Service is provided
Support is provided in a variety of settings, such as:
  • Clients living in their own homes.
  • Clients living with their families, partners or other relatives.
  • Clients residing in Hostels or Nursing Homes.
  • Supported shared accommodation.
  • Support is based on our client's individual needs and ranges from 4 hours per week, through to 24 hours, 7 days per week care.
Our Client Profile
All clients accepted into the service have an Acquired Brain Injury which has been caused through trauma, accidents, sickness or illness, and resulted in permanent damage to the brain. The ages of our clients range from 14 years to 65 years of age. Our clients are diverse and are from varying ethnic, cultural and non-english speaking backgrounds.
The Referral, Assessment and Entry Process
The 'Step by Step' process for acceptance into the service is as follows -
First telephone ABI Services on 02 9649 7299 and speak to our friendly staff who will explain the nature of our service and how it may fit your needs.
When it is identified that ABI Services may assist you, or your client's requirements, we will then ask for a written referral from you highlighting the person's areas of need, brief medical history and present living arrangements.
We will then arrange an assessment meeting to discuss your or your client's needs. This meeting includes all persons associated, the client and others, (i.e. family, professionals, or other service providers etc.)
Entry Criteria
For a new client to be accepted into the service the following must apply -
  • Must have an Acquired Brain Injury.
  • Must be referred either verbally or in writing, with a brief medical history, social history and a basic summary of the client's support needs (if known?).
  • Aged between 14 and 55 years at the time of referral.
  • The willingness to participate in a client assessment before acceptance into the service, to gain an understanding of the support requirements and to establish how ABI Services can meet these needs.
