What is carecareers?

carecareers is a not-for-profit recruitment initiative aimed at increasing attraction and retention within the disability, community care and aged care sector. 

carecareers gives you the opportunity to learn from people already in the sector and to develop a deeper understanding of what the sector can offer you. The carecareers website offers a wide variety of resources and careers information,

What is the disability, community and aged care sector?

The disability, community and aged care sector is one of the largest industries in Australia, providing a range of services aimed at improving the quality of life for members of the community with support needs.

With a large component of not-for-profit (NFP) organisations, charities and benevolent institutions, the sector is currently enjoying a period of unprecedented growth.  It is anticipated that tens of thousands of new jobs will be created over the next five years. Taht is because demand is growing as Australia's population ages and the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) rolls out.

How is carecareers changing the perceptions of the sector? 

Research has shown that many in today’s society have general misconceptions about what it means to work in the sector. carecareers’ award-winning marketing initiatives have used the positive experiences of real sector workers to build public awareness of the benefits of working in it.

There you will find all the information you need to get an understanding of the clients you could be supporting, as well as the environment in which you might be working. You'll also discover the rewards the sector has to offer, and the training and career development opportunities available to you.

How do I work out what sort of job I could want to do?

The carecareers website is a good starting point for working out in which area of the growing disability, community and aged care sector you could develop your career. You can do the Career Quiz to find out which roles might most appeal to you.

I’m a student and would like to find out more about the disability, community and aged care sector. How can I get involved?

You might be interested in projectABLE, carecareers' student initiative. projectABLE aims to at inspire high school and tertiary students to investigate a career in the disability sector.

What should I do if I don't have any experience in the sector?

The best way to overcome this is by searching for jobs that provide on-the-job training.

In addition volunteering can quickly boost your exposure to the sector. Volunteer roles can assist your overall career development and your attractiveness to potential employers.

Ultimately, you should be open about your previous work experience and knowledge with an employer.  However you should also stress the importance of previous relevant life experiences, as many can help an hiring manager  'join the dots' to a new role.

What's the best way to find a job?

Most of the major online job boards, and quite a few smaller job boards, carry roles in the disability, community and aged care sector. If you read our advice on carecareers you will pick up job names, role types, service types and organisation names that you can use as ketwords in your search.

Can applicants from overseas gain sponsorship from organisations in the sector?

If you’re eligible to work in Australia you can look for jobs in the disability, community and aged care sector.

If you don’t have a visa to work in Australia you could consider contacting some organisations directly. However in most cases they are unlikely to be in a position to provide sponsorship. 

What format should my resume be in?

When you find a job on an online job board that you wish to apply for, in most cases pressing "Apply" will lead you into a step by step process.

You will be asked to register your details, if you have not done so already,  and then probably to login again to complete the application process.

At some point you will be asked to attach a resumé/curriculum vitae (CV). You should ensure that your resume is in one of the following formats: .doc (Word document) or .pdf (Adobe Acrobat document) or .rtf (generic text file document).

If you don’t upload your resume in one of these formats, a prospective employer may not be able to read your application. This will reduce your chance of being successful in getting the role.

It is also very important that you include a tailored cover letter - one that has been written with the particular job in mind - with any job application.

No, carecareers is an online career advisory service. The service is run and developed by National Disability Services (NDS). 

How does the carecareers service work for jobseekers and what are the benefits?

carecareers aims to grow the pool of talent by working with jobseekers with previous experience, as well as those who are new to our sector. We actively encourage people with valuable skills and experience to consider a career change into our sector.  

Our website provides practical advice to new entrants, and helps prepare them for the change.  We can give them key information about the sector and the roles they are applying for. We also advise job applicants on how best to present their details in their resumes and letters of application.
