A Few Basics

Regardless of the role, any employer in this sector would be looking for:

  • A good, positive attitude - It might sound obvious but it is the starting point for any employer
  • Strong values - Anyone working in this sector needs to be ethical and treat people with respect
  • A basic understanding of the sector - You can learn a lot from a little internet research.  If you don’t own a computer yourself, you can usually book one for free at your local library
  • Ability to work well with others - This sector is all about team work and working to shared objectives. The ability to follow directions can also be important for safety.
  • Punctuality - Being on time for work and having a good reputation counts for a lot.
  • Patience and the ability to listen - This will be important particularly when you are starting out, as some aspects of the work may be new to you.
  • Attention to detail - This is crucial in an industry in which individuals’ personal goals and aspirations are all-important.
  • Willingness to learn new skills - The world is changing faster than it ever did, and we all have to learn to adapt.  It’s not that hard to do if you regard learning new skills as a welcome challenge.

The following might be helpful to you at entry level:

  • First Aid Certificate - Invaluable and essential for most entry level roles. Google “First Aid Certificate” and your suburb name for local options
  • Driver’s License - Having a driver’s license will give you many more options. It's not so important for Residential Care roles.
  • Disability Standards / Aged Care Rights and Responsibilities - These give you a great grounding in the work of our sector.
  • NDIS Code of Conduct - applies to all workers and service providers delivering NDIS supports or services.
  • Qualifications?  Certificate III in Individual Support - This is the starting point for many (but not all) employers in our sector. (Note this qualification has replaced the old Certificate IIIs in Disability Work, Aged Care and Home and Community Care).
  • An up to date résumé - Get some tips on how to write a résumé that highlights your skills and experience.
  • Working with children check - For some positions working with children and young people, you may need to undergo a Working With Children Check as part of your application - find out more.
  • Police check - A National Police Check will be required for most positions. Find out more if you are new to the sector.
