What does your role as a dietician involve? I work as part of a team of health professionals that support the elderly to stay independent at home. My role is to ensure they have access to adequate food and nutrition as poor nutriton and malnutrition can result in premature entry into high care facilities, and is very costly to the health system. |

I visit clients at home, discuss a client's nutritional needs with the client, carers or family and advise on how to make simple changes to improve their intake of food. I also work with coordinators of 'care packages' advising them of their client's dietary needs. We also provide education to the community, and training to other health professionals, to raise awareness and provide practical ideas.
How did you become a dietitian?
I completed a Bachelor of Science Nurition (Honours) at the University of Sydney.
Is being a dietician a rewarding job and what kind of skills do you need?
You need to be passionate about the issues, have research and project management skills, written and verbal skills and the ability to work as part of a team. It is rewarding when you see someone eating better and feeling stronger, or when carers feel more confident about how they can care for their loved ones.
