Counsellors

Counsellors assist people to better understand themselves by explaining options, setting goals and helping them to take action. Counsellors work with clients and their families providing them with information about services in their area and supporting them in being more independent, and enhancing their quality of life. Counsellors also provide training and advice on managing challenging behaviours.

Counsellors need the following skills and qualifications:

  • Empathy, a caring nature, patience and understanding
  • Good communication skills
  • Maturity, insight and experience
  • Empowerment skills
  • Ability to support and facilitate clients' personal growth and development without dependency
  • Tertiary qualifications in counselling or psychology
