Direct Service Delivery (DSD) 5

DSD 5 roles are generally frontline positions, which means you are working directly with people with disability and making a real difference to a person’s life by supporting them to achieve their individual goals and aspirations, and to live in the community as they choose. Role titles within DSD 5 include:

  • Community Support Worker
  • Recreation Activities Officer
  • Occupational Therapy Assistant
  • Community Outreach Worker
  • Case Worker
  • Volunteer Coordinator

As a DSD 5, your job responsibilities include supporting people with disability to achieve their goals, while ensuring you use a person-centred approach - which means putting the needs, wants and aims of the people you support first. At this level, you will be able to resolve issues and provide support to people with disability in a range of complex situations. You’ll also have valuable, in-depth knowledge of one or more key areas of your work, and within your team. With your experience, you will probably be leading, training or guiding other staff. As a DSD 5, you’ll also assist in planning services and support, allocating staff resources, plus you’ll constantly be building strong working relationships with community groups and other agencies and services.

Qualifications and experience

Employers will specify qualification or equivalent experience requirements for particular roles at this level. However, the range of qualifications or training and experience that align with a DSD 5 are equivalent to a Vocational and Educational Training Diploma, Advanced Diploma or an Associate Degree.

Don’t worry if you don’t have formal qualifications or training in disability, as you’ll most certainly have other skills, experience, capabilities and qualifications that are extremely useful and will help contribute to having a successful and enjoyable career in the disability sector. Having the right attitude and a desire to make a difference are two other important qualities that you’ll need as a DSD 5.
