Direct Service Delivery (DSD) 1

 

DSD 1 roles are generally frontline positions, which means you are working directly with people with disability and making a real difference to a person’s life by supporting them to achieve their individual goals and aspirations, and to live in the community as they choose. Role titles within DSD 1 include:

 

 

But what exactly is involved at level DSD 1? You’ll be learning and developing skills and capabilities to support people with disability in all areas of life, such as assisting with basic personal care, working in homes and in the community, as well as providing people with the support to achieve an individual’s life goals and meet their daily needs. As a DSD 1, you need to be aware of person-centred approaches - which means putting the needs, wants and aims of the people you support first.

 

The types of tasks performed within DSD 1 roles are often structured and repetitive, giving you the opportunity to master the work and become confident in your role. You’ll usually work as a part of a team, be supervised and have lots of opportunities for on-the-job training.

 

Qualifications and experience
 

You don’t need to worry if you don’t have formal qualifications or training in disability, as you’ll almost certainly have other skills, experience and capabilities that are extremely useful and that will help contribute to having a successful and enjoyable career in the disability sector. Having the right attitude and a desire to make a difference are two other important qualities that you’ll need as a DSD 1. 

 

Employers will specify qualification or equivalent experience requirements for particular roles, but generally you’ll need to have a current driver’s licence and first aid certificate to be considered for a DSD1 role.
