Hiring best practice
What is hiring best practice?
Hiring best practice refers to finding the best and most sustainable methods for attracting, recruiting and retaining employees. It looks at what stops people from joining the sector and how to overcome these barriers.
Why is it important to practice good recruitment?
Any industry faced with the combination of a growing service demand and a declining labour pool will face recruitment challenges. In the human services industry, where this problem is exacerbated by a poor image of the sector as a career of choice, it’s imperative that we do everything we can to attract, recruit and retain the right candidates.
What are the issues facing the sector?
- An ageing population – as the population ages, more people are requiring support for longer.
- Social demographic changes – changes in family situations are pushing up service demand. Higher divorce rates, declining birth rates, increased female workforce participation and the geographical dispersion of families are reducing the number of people available to provide informal care for family members.
- More complex services – the move away from institutions towards encouraging clients to remain in their own homes has created a shift in the roles required as well as increasing the amount of staff with a broader set of skills required to provide that support.
- Public perception – research has shown that there are many misconceptions surrounding the sector, the people who work within it and the work they do. People either know very little about the work the sector performs or they have negative perceptions of that work.
- Remuneration – community care roles within not-for-profit organisations can sometimes struggle to compete with the salaries offered by government and private organisations.
- No career progression – the perception by jobseekers and their key influencers is that career progression is not at the same level as other sectors.
