The sector's clients

Who will I be working for?

The person you work for is your client. Working with your client is about offering tailored, individualised and meaningful support, and about facilitation and empowerment. Providing those typically builds partnerships that are mutually beneficial to you and your clients.

Who will my clients be?

You may be supporting the independent living of frail and elderly clients, or supporting clients with disabilities ranging in ages from young children right through to adults.

What kind of disabilities or conditions will my clients have?

  • Physical disability
  • Intellectual disability
  • Developmental disability
  • Autism Spectrum disorder
  • Hearing loss
  • Visual loss
  • Behavioural disorders
  • Mental health issues
  • Ageing and frailty
  • Arthritis
  • Dementia
  • Alzheimer's disease
  • Parkinson's disease

Support needs can become compounded when a client has multiple disabilities, impairments or disorders.

The main focus of work is on achieving person-centred goals, and Gloria's story is an example of working with older clients in the community.

Gloria's story

Gloria has just turned 60 and is a volunteer. She works three days per week with Desiree who is in her early 80s and is fiercely determined to keep living at home alone.

The two share a wicked sense of humour, and enjoy the small things in life, like the time when Gloria taught Desiree how to use an Automatic Teller Machine (ATM) for the first time.

Just getting out of the house and doing her own shopping is a goal in itself for her, which Gloria helps make happen.
